This Grade 9 Business Studies course introduces students to the dynamic world of business, focusing on fundamental concepts, functions, and the role of entrepreneurship. Students will develop a foundational understanding of personal finance, marketing, and business ethics to prepare them for future economic participation in Canada.

01Business Fundamentals
Students explore the basic elements of business, including economic resources, forms of ownership, and the impact of ethical practices.
An introduction to how businesses satisfy consumer needs and wants while navigating scarcity, supply, and demand.
An examination of different business structures, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, and franchises.
A look into how businesses balance profitability with ethical decision-making and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
An overview of global trade, including imports, exports, and the impact of international business on the Canadian economy.

02Functions of a Business
This unit breaks down the core operations of a business, including production, human resources, marketing, and accounting.
Students learn about the factors of production and the processes involved in creating goods and services.
An exploration of how businesses recruit, train, compensate, and manage their employees.
A study of the marketing mix (the 4 Ps) and the strategies businesses use to promote their products to target audiences.
An introduction to basic accounting principles, financial statements, and the importance of tracking business finances.

03Personal Finance
Students develop essential financial literacy skills, focusing on income management, banking, credit, and investing.
Students learn how to track income, create personal budgets, and understand the importance of saving for the future.
An overview of the Canadian banking system, types of accounts, and the services provided by financial institutions.
A critical look at how credit works, the cost of borrowing, and how to build and maintain a good credit score.
An introduction to basic investment vehicles, risk versus return, and long-term financial planning strategies.

04Entrepreneurship
This unit focuses on the entrepreneurial mindset, the process of generating innovative ideas, and the steps to launch a new venture.
Students identify the traits, skills, and mindsets that successful entrepreneurs possess.
An exploration of how entrepreneurs identify opportunities, solve problems, and innovate within the marketplace.
