JC 2 Music.
The JC2 H1 Music syllabus develops students' critical thinking and musical perception through the study of diverse musical traditions in their historical and social contexts. Students will explore how music reflects and shapes cultural identities, societal changes, and historical events in both Asian and Western landscapes.

01Music and Society in 20th Century Asia
This unit examines the development of musical identities across Asia, focusing on the intersection of traditional practices, nation-building, and modernization.
Examine the development of Singapore's musical identity from pre-independence to the modern era. Students will analyze how multiculturalism and nation-building influenced local compositions.
Investigate how traditional Asian musical forms, such as Gamelan and Chinese orchestral music, have adapted to globalization. Students will explore the tension between preservation and modernization.
Analyze the use of music as a tool for political expression and social change across various Asian nations. The focus will be on protest songs and state-sponsored propaganda.

02Western Art Music in Historical Context
Students will explore the evolution of Western Art Music from the Romantic era through the post-war Avant-Garde, analyzing how historical upheavals shaped musical innovation.
Explore how 19th-century composers utilized folk tunes and nationalistic themes to foster national identity. Students will study the socio-political climate of Europe during this period.
Examine the radical shifts in musical language during the early 20th century, including atonality and primitivism. This topic connects musical innovation to the anxieties of the World War eras.
Investigate the experimental music movements following World War II, such as minimalism and electronic music. Students will discuss how these movements challenged the very definition of music.
