This H1 Music curriculum focuses on the historical, social, and cultural contexts of diverse musical traditions. Students will develop critical listening and analytical skills to understand how music reflects and shapes society across different eras and geographies.

01Foundations of Western Art Music
An exploration of the development of Western Art Music from the Baroque to the Classical era, focusing on structural innovations and societal shifts.
An exploration of Baroque musical characteristics, focusing on polyphony, the basso continuo, and the concerto grosso. Students will examine how the patronage system influenced musical output.
A study of the structural innovations of the Classical period, particularly Sonata form. The topic highlights the shift towards clarity, balance, and homophonic textures.
Investigating the role of music in 18th-century society, including the rise of public concerts and the changing status of the composer. Students will analyze the socio-economic factors driving musical consumption.

02Romanticism and the 20th Century
A critical look at the expansion of emotional expression in the 19th century and the radical fragmentation of musical language in the 20th century.
Examining the Romantic emphasis on individual expression, emotion, and programmatic music. The topic also covers how composers integrated folk elements to express national identity.
Analyzing the transition into the 20th century through Impressionism and the gradual dissolution of traditional tonal centers. Students will explore new harmonic languages and timbral focuses.
An overview of radical 20th-century movements, including serialism, minimalism, and electronic music. The topic questions the very definition of music in the modern era.

03Jazz and Popular Music Contexts
Tracing the evolution of popular music genres from early jazz to contemporary global pop, emphasizing socio-cultural impacts.
Tracing the roots of jazz from blues and ragtime to swing and bebop. Students will study the social history of jazz and its foundational elements like improvisation and syncopation.
Exploring the emergence of rock and roll in the mid-20th century as a cultural and musical phenomenon. The topic addresses issues of race, youth culture, and commercialization.
Examining the impact of globalization and digital technology on contemporary popular music. Students will analyze how local traditions blend with global pop trends.

04Asian Music and Cross-Cultural Explorations
An introduction to the rich musical traditions of Asia and an analysis of how these traditions interact with global musical practices.
A study of indigenous musical traditions in Southeast Asia, with a focus on the Gamelan ensembles of Indonesia. Students will explore the communal aspects and cyclical structures of the music.
An introduction to the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions of Indian classical music. The topic covers the concepts of raga and tala, and the spiritual context of the performances.
Investigating how traditional Asian musical elements are integrated into modern and Western musical frameworks. Students will analyze case studies of cross-cultural musical syncretism.
