JC 1 Art.
The H1 Art curriculum for JC1 aims to develop students' visual literacy, critical thinking, and creative expression. Through the Study of Visual Arts (SOVA) and studio practice, students will analyse artworks across different contexts and explore various media to articulate their own artistic intentions.

01Foundations of Visual Analysis
An introduction to the formal elements and principles of design. Students will develop the vocabulary needed to critically analyse and interpret visual texts.
An exploration of how line, shape, colour, and texture are used to create meaning. Students will apply visual vocabulary to deconstruct selected artworks.
Introduction to structured methods of art criticism, focusing on description, analysis, interpretation, and judgement. Students will practice structured critiques of local and international works.
Examining how historical, cultural, and social contexts influence the creation and reception of art. The focus will be on Southeast Asian and Western art movements.

02Art and Identity
A thematic investigation into how artists explore and express personal, cultural, and national identities. Students will examine portraiture, self-representation, and cultural symbols.
Analysing how artists represent themselves and others, moving beyond physical likeness to psychological and social dimensions.
Investigating the works of pioneer and contemporary Singaporean artists to understand the search for a distinct Nanyang style and national identity.
Exploring how gender roles and expectations are challenged or reinforced through visual arts. Students will study feminist art movements and contemporary perspectives.

03Studio Practice and Material Exploration
Hands-on exploration of 2D and 3D media. Students will experiment with techniques and processes to translate their ideas into visual forms.
Utilising drawing not just as a final product, but as a fundamental tool for observation, ideation, and problem-solving.
Experimenting with various painting mediums and applying colour theory to evoke mood and create spatial depth.
Exploring volume, mass, and space through basic sculptural techniques such as assemblage, modeling, and carving.

04Art, Space, and Society
Examining the relationship between art, the physical environment, and the public. Students will study public art, architecture, and socially engaged art practices.
Analysing the role of art in public spaces, including murals, installations, and monuments, and their impact on community identity.
Exploring architecture as a functional art form. Students will study key architectural movements and how built environments shape human behaviour.
Investigating how artists use their practice to address social, political, and environmental issues, aiming to provoke thought and inspire change.

05Synthesis and Exhibition

Guiding students through the process of selecting, refining, and connecting their studio pieces to form a unified thematic series.
Understanding the role of the curator. Students will learn how spatial arrangement, lighting, and sequencing affect the narrative of an exhibition.
Teaching students to articulate their artistic intentions, processes, and thematic concerns clearly and concisely in written form.
