A few notes on teaching this unit

Watch Out for These Misconceptions

  • The Indian Constitution is just a 'bag of borrowings' from the West.

While it took inspiration, every provision was debated and modified for Indian conditions. A 'Modification Map' activity helps students see how concepts like federalism were uniquely tailored for India.

  • The Constitution was written by only a few people.

It was the result of three years of work by nearly 300 members representing diverse backgrounds. Showing students the variety of voices in the Assembly helps correct the 'single author' myth.
