A comprehensive studio based program designed to develop technical skills and aesthetic awareness in 4th Class students. This course emphasizes the creative process through hands on exploration of diverse media and critical response to historical and contemporary artworks.

01Lines, Layers, and Landscapes
Students explore the fundamental elements of drawing and painting to capture the world around them. This unit focuses on observational skills and the expressive potential of different mark making tools.
Students will develop observational skills by drawing natural objects, focusing on form and basic shading techniques.
Students will experiment with charcoal to capture diverse textures in natural objects, focusing on expressive mark-making.
Students will learn to mix primary colors to create secondary colors and understand basic color relationships.
Students will explore the use of warm and cool colors to create depth and mood in simple landscape paintings.
Students will apply techniques like color fading and detail reduction to create the illusion of distance in a painted landscape.
Students will learn and practice the fundamental proportions of the human face to create accurate portraits.
Students will use non-realistic colors to convey emotions and personality in self-portraits or portraits of others.
Students will create self-portraits, focusing on capturing their own likeness and expressing personal identity.
Students will learn the basics of one-point perspective to create the illusion of depth in drawings.
Students will combine different drawing materials (e.g., pencil, charcoal, pastels) to create a single artwork.
Students will explore the concept of value (lightness and darkness) and its role in creating contrast and form in drawings.
Students will learn basic watercolour techniques such as washes, wet-on-wet, and lifting to create expressive paintings.
Students will paint a still life arrangement using acrylic paints, focusing on color mixing, layering, and brush control.
Students will create abstract paintings, using color, line, and shape to express emotions or ideas without representational forms.

02Form and Space in Three Dimensions
An investigation into sculpture and construction using clay and recycled materials. Students learn to manipulate volume and consider the relationship between an object and its surrounding space.
Students will learn the pinch pot method to create simple ceramic forms, focusing on shaping and smoothing clay.
Students will learn to create forms using the coil method, focusing on joining techniques and building height.
Students will use clay slabs to construct geometric forms, focusing on precise cutting and scoring techniques.
Students will explore various methods for decorating clay surfaces, including carving, impressing, and applying slip.
Students will create sculptures using recycled and found objects, focusing on transforming their original purpose and meaning.
Students will create assemblage sculptures that tell a story or convey a theme using a collection of found materials.
Students will explore the concept of sustainability in art, focusing on using recycled materials and environmentally conscious processes.
Students will use wire to create three-dimensional line drawings, exploring form and negative space.
Students will explore the principles of movement in art by creating simple kinetic sculptures using various materials.
Students will explore paper as a sculptural medium, using techniques like folding, cutting, and scoring to create three-dimensional forms.
Students will create relief sculptures, exploring how to create the illusion of depth and dimension on a two-dimensional plane.
Students will explore examples of public art and installation art, discussing their purpose, context, and interaction with viewers.
Students will learn to construct armatures using wire or other materials to provide structural support for larger sculptures.
Students will create sculptures inspired by natural forms, focusing on organic shapes and textures.

03Patterns, Prints, and Textiles
Students explore surface design through printmaking and fabric work. This unit emphasizes repetition, rhythm, and the tactile qualities of different fibers.
Students will create unique prints using monoprinting techniques, focusing on spontaneous mark-making and color application.
Students will learn the reduction linocut method to create multi-color prints from a single block, focusing on planning and precision.
Students will design and create repeating patterns suitable for printmaking, exploring concepts of symmetry and tessellation.
Students will learn basic weaving terminology and techniques using simple cardboard looms to create small woven samples.
Students will experiment with different types of fibers and weaving techniques to create varied textures in their woven pieces.
Students will explore tie-dye methods to create vibrant patterns on fabric, focusing on folding, tying, and color application.
Students will learn the basics of batik, using wax as a resist to create intricate designs on fabric.
Students will be introduced to basic screen printing techniques, creating simple designs on paper or fabric.
Students will explore various hand-stitching techniques and embellishments to add texture and detail to fabric art.
Students will learn basic quilting and patchwork techniques, focusing on combining fabric pieces to create larger designs.
Students will use digital tools to create repeating patterns, exploring symmetry, color, and motif development.
Students will explore textile traditions from various cultures, examining their techniques, symbolism, and cultural significance.
Students will create relief prints using natural objects (leaves, vegetables) as printing blocks, exploring organic patterns.

04The Artist's Lens: History and Criticism
A deep dive into art history and the role of the critic. Students learn to analyze artworks from different eras and cultures while developing their own artistic voice.
Students will explore ancient Irish art forms, including megalithic carvings and Celtic metalwork, analyzing their symbolism and techniques.
Students will study prominent Irish landscape painters, examining how they captured the unique beauty and identity of the Irish landscape.
Students will explore the works of contemporary Irish artists, discussing current themes, media, and their relevance to modern Ireland.
Students will learn and apply the four steps of art criticism (describe, analyze, interpret, judge) to evaluate artworks systematically.
Students will identify and analyze how artists use the elements of art (line, shape, color, value, form, texture, space) in various artworks.
Students will identify and interpret how artists apply the principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity) to organize artworks.
Students will examine how art has been used throughout history as a tool for propaganda and persuasion.
Students will explore artworks that advocate for social justice, environmental awareness, or other causes, discussing their impact.
Students will identify and interpret common symbols in art from various cultures and historical periods.
