5th Year Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE).
Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) provides particular opportunities to foster the personal development, health, and well-being of the individual child. In 5th Class, pupils explore their own identity, develop healthy relationships, and understand their role as active citizens in the wider world.

01Myself - Self-Identity and Feelings
Pupils explore their personal strengths, learn to manage complex emotions, and develop strategies for coping with physical and emotional changes.
Children explore their personal strengths, talents, and the unique qualities that shape their identity. They learn to appreciate their own self-worth and build self-confidence.
Pupils identify a wide range of emotions and discuss healthy ways to express and manage them. They explore how feelings influence behaviour and decision-making.
Students examine the physical and emotional changes that occur as they grow older. They develop coping strategies for dealing with life transitions.

02Myself - Health and Well-being
This unit focuses on personal hygiene, the importance of a balanced diet, and strategies for maintaining personal safety in various environments.
Children learn about the importance of personal hygiene and how to care for their changing bodies. They discuss routines that promote physical health.
Pupils investigate the food pyramid and the role of a balanced diet in maintaining energy and health. They also explore the benefits of regular physical activity.
Students identify potential hazards in their environment and learn strategies to protect themselves. This includes understanding personal boundaries and seeking help.

03Myself and Others - Building Relationships
Pupils develop communication skills, learn to resolve conflicts peacefully, and explore the value of diversity and inclusivity in their communities.
Children practice active listening and assertive communication skills. They explore how body language and tone of voice impact interactions.
Pupils learn to identify the root causes of conflicts and develop strategies for peaceful resolution. They practice negotiation and compromise.
Students explore the diversity within their classroom and community, fostering respect and empathy. They discuss the negative impacts of prejudice and discrimination.

04Myself and the Wider World - Active Citizenship
Children investigate their roles as responsible citizens, focusing on environmental care, media literacy, and global interconnectedness.
Children investigate their role in protecting the local and global environment. They explore sustainable practices such as recycling and energy conservation.
Pupils critically analyse media messages and advertising. They also learn essential rules for staying safe and respectful online.
Students explore the concept of community and the responsibilities of being a citizen. They discuss global issues and how local actions can have a global impact.
