Human Senses and the Body

Naming and locating the external parts of the human body through movement and observation.

The Animal Kingdom
An introduction to the diversity of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Group animals based on their physical characteristics and structures.
Exploring the differences between carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.
Observing how animals are suited to the environments in which they live.

Plant Detectives
Investigating the structure of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.
Identifying and naming common plants found in the local environment.
Learning the names and functions of roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.
Comparing trees that keep their leaves with those that lose them annually.

Everyday Materials
Exploring the properties of wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock.
Identifying what objects are made of and distinguishing between an object and the material it is made from.
Describing materials based on whether they are hard, soft, shiny, dull, or waterproof.
Comparing and grouping materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.

Seasonal Changes
Observing the four seasons and how day length varies across the year.
Observing and describing the weather associated with spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Investigating how the amount of daylight changes depending on the time of year.

Working Scientifically
Developing the skills to ask questions, perform simple tests, and record findings.
Using drawings, charts, and simple tables to share what has been learned.
