Year 1 Science
A foundational journey through the natural and physical world designed to spark curiosity. Students engage in hands-on investigations to understand living things, materials, and the changing patterns of the seasons.

01Human Senses and the Body
Students identify basic parts of the human body and explore how our five senses help us process the world around us.
Naming and locating the external parts of the human body through movement and observation.
An introduction to major internal organs like the heart and brain, understanding their basic functions.
Investigating how our eyes help us see and perceive the world, including light and dark.
Discovering how our ears detect sounds and how different sounds can be described.
Exploring how taste and smell work together to help us identify foods and detect dangers.
Investigating how our skin helps us feel different textures, temperatures, and pressures.

02The Animal Kingdom
An introduction to the diversity of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Classifying animals into mammals and birds based on their physical characteristics and life cycles.
Grouping animals based on their unique adaptations to different environments.
Exploring the differences in animal diets and how they obtain food.
Observing how animals are suited to the environments in which they live.
Investigating the basic life cycles of common animals, such as butterflies or frogs.
Understanding the basic needs of common pets and how to care for them responsibly.

03Plant Detectives
Investigating the structure of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.
Identifying and naming common plants found in the local environment through observation.
Learning the names and basic functions of roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.
Comparing trees that keep their leaves with those that lose them annually.
Investigating the essential requirements for plant growth: light, water, and warmth.
Hands-on experience planting seeds and observing their growth over time.

04Everyday Materials
Exploring the properties of wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock.
Identifying what objects are made of and distinguishing between an object and the material it is made from.
Describing materials based on whether they are hard or soft and testing their resistance to change.
Investigating materials based on their appearance, specifically if they are shiny or dull.
Testing materials to see if they are waterproof or absorbent and discussing their uses.
Comparing and grouping materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.
Evaluating which materials are best suited for specific purposes based on their properties.

05Seasonal Changes
Observing the four seasons and how day length varies across the year.
Observing and describing the typical weather associated with spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Investigating how the amount of daylight changes depending on the time of year.
Observing how plants and animals respond to the changing seasons.
Using simple tools to measure and record basic weather conditions like temperature and rainfall.

06Working Scientifically
Developing the skills to ask questions, perform simple tests, and record findings.
Learning how to turn a curious thought into a scientific question that can be investigated.
Learning to make simple predictions about what might happen in an investigation based on prior knowledge or observations.
Performing hands-on investigations safely and carefully, making observations.
Using drawings and labelled diagrams to share what has been learned from observations.
Using simple charts and tables to organise and present findings from investigations.
Discussing and sharing observations and findings with others.

07Light and Shadows
Exploring light sources, how light travels, and the formation of shadows.
Identifying natural and artificial sources of light in our environment.
Investigating the difference between light and dark and how light helps us see.
Exploring how shadows are formed when light is blocked by an object.
Observing how shadows change throughout the day and with different light sources.

08Sound and Vibrations
Discovering how sounds are made by vibrations and how they travel.
Investigating how different objects can produce sounds through vibrations.
Exploring how sounds travel through different materials to our ears.
Investigating how to make loud and quiet sounds and observing how sound intensity changes with distance.

09Forces and Movement
An introduction to pushes, pulls, and how they make objects move or stop.
Exploring how pushes and pulls are forces that make objects move, stop, or change direction.
Investigating how different forces affect the movement of objects.
An introduction to friction as a force that slows things down or stops them.

10Our Local Environment
Observing and describing the local environment, including plants, animals, and human impact.
Observing and identifying plants and animals found within the school environment.
Finding and identifying common mini-beasts in their microhabitats.
Discussing ways to care for the local environment and its living things.
Understanding the importance of recycling and reusing materials to protect our planet.
