Two of the five themes of geography, location and place, provide complementary frameworks for describing where something is and what it is like. Absolute location uses coordinate systems, such as latitude and longitude, to identify a fixed point on Earth's surface precisely. Relative location describes position in relation to other places (north of, adjacent to, downstream from), which can shift depending on perspective and purpose. In US 8th grade geography, students apply both types to real-world examples, from identifying the absolute coordinates of a city to explaining why a settlement developed where it did based on its relative position to resources or trade routes.

The theme of place adds the qualitative dimension: the physical characteristics that make a location distinct (climate, topography, vegetation, wildlife) and the human characteristics layered on top (language, architecture, industry, religion, cultural traditions).
