JC 1 Literature in English.
The H1 Literature in English syllabus aims to develop students' critical thinking and literary analysis skills through the study of a range of literary texts. Students will explore how writers use language, form, and structure to create meaning, while formulating sensitive and informed personal responses.

01Fundamentals of Literary Analysis: Unseen Poetry
An introduction to the critical appreciation of unseen poetry, focusing on form, structure, and poetic devices.
Introduction to analyzing how stanzaic forms, meter, and rhyme schemes contribute to meaning in unseen poetry. Students will examine the structural choices poets make to guide the reader's experience.
Exploring the use of metaphors, similes, personification, and sensory details in poetry. Students will evaluate how these devices evoke emotional responses and build thematic depth.
Analyzing the speaker's voice, shifts in tone, and the construction of persona in various poems. This topic helps students distinguish between the poet and the constructed speaker.

02Fundamentals of Literary Analysis: Unseen Prose
Developing skills to critically analyze unseen prose passages, with an emphasis on narrative techniques and characterization.
Examining how first, second, and third-person perspectives shape the reader's understanding of a prose text. Students will assess the reliability and limitations of different narrators.
Investigating the methods writers use to construct, reveal, and develop characters over the course of a narrative. Students will analyze dialogue, action, and internal monologue.
Analyzing how physical and temporal settings establish mood, foreshadow events, and reflect character states. Students will explore the symbolic weight of specific environments.

03The Set Text: Context, Plot, and Themes
An in-depth exploration of the prescribed set text, focusing on its historical context, narrative architecture, and central themes.
Exploring the socio-political and historical background of the set text to inform literary analysis. Students will consider how external contexts shape the author's concerns.
Mapping the narrative arc, identifying inciting incidents, climaxes, and resolutions within the set text. Students will analyze how structural choices drive the central conflict.
Identifying and tracing major themes such as power, identity, or betrayal throughout the set text. Students will evaluate how characters and symbols embody these abstract ideas.

04The Set Text: Advanced Analysis and Essay Writing
Honing close reading skills and developing the ability to construct coherent, persuasive literary arguments based on the set text.
Conducting detailed stylistic analysis of significant excerpts from the set text to uncover deeper meanings. Students will link micro-level language choices to macro-level themes.
Developing strong, arguable thesis statements and structuring coherent, persuasive literary essays. Students will learn to outline arguments that directly address essay prompts.
Learning to seamlessly embed quotations and paraphrase effectively to support analytical claims. Students will practice moving beyond summary to rigorous analysis of evidence.

05Synthesis and Exam Preparation
Consolidating literary skills, practicing timed responses, and refining essay writing techniques in preparation for the A-Level examination.
Drawing connections between different parts of the set text to build comprehensive arguments. Students will synthesize their understanding of character arcs and thematic resolutions.
Practicing timed essay writing and developing strategies for unpacking complex exam prompts. Students will learn to plan efficiently under pressure.
Critiquing peer essays to identify strengths and areas for improvement in literary arguments. Students will apply the SEAB marking criteria to evaluate and refine their own writing.
