JC 2 General Paper.
The H1 General Paper curriculum aims to develop in students the ability to think critically, construct cogent arguments, and communicate their ideas clearly and accurately. It explores a range of global and local issues, fostering a deeper understanding of the world and Singapore's place within it.

01Society and Culture
This unit explores the evolving dynamics of modern societies, focusing on media influence, national identity, and demographic shifts.
An examination of human behaviour, societal norms, and their impact on contemporary global issues.
Investigate the role of the arts and heritage in forging a sense of national identity, particularly in the context of Singapore. Students will debate the value of state funding for the arts.
Analyze the challenges and opportunities presented by an aging population and immigration. Students will explore strategies for maintaining social harmony in diverse societies.

02Politics and Governance
This unit examines the structures of power, the responsibilities of the state, and the complexities of international relations.
Assess the responsibilities of the government in providing for its citizens and maintaining order. Students will compare different models of governance.
Examine the dynamics of international relations, focusing on the roles of superpowers and international organizations. Students will analyze contemporary geopolitical conflicts.
Debate the universality of human rights versus cultural relativism. Students will explore issues such as freedom of speech and the right to privacy.

03Science, Technology, and the Environment
This unit investigates the ethical, social, and environmental implications of scientific progress and technological innovation.
Evaluate the ethical dilemmas posed by rapid advancements in fields like artificial intelligence and biotechnology. Students will consider the need for ethical frameworks.
Investigate the causes and consequences of climate change, and evaluate the effectiveness of global and local responses. Students will explore the concept of sustainable development.
Analyze the societal and economic impacts of global health crises. Students will evaluate the preparedness of nations and the role of the WHO.

04Economics and Development
This unit delves into the forces driving the global economy, the changing nature of work, and the persistent challenge of poverty.
Examine the benefits and drawbacks of globalization, focusing on its impact on income distribution. Students will debate whether globalization has failed the working class.
Investigate how automation and the gig economy are transforming the nature of work. Students will consider the implications for workers' rights and social security.
Analyze the root causes of poverty and evaluate the effectiveness of different welfare systems. Students will debate the merits of universal basic income.

05Application and Evaluation (Paper 1 & 2 Skills)
This unit focuses on the explicit teaching of skills required for the General Paper examination, including essay writing and comprehension analysis.
Develop skills in analyzing essay questions, formulating a clear thesis, and structuring a balanced argument. Students will practice writing introductions and body paragraphs.
Enhance reading comprehension skills and learn to tackle the Application Question. Students will practice evaluating authors' arguments in the context of Singapore.
Master the skill of synthesizing multiple perspectives from paired passages. Students will learn to construct a nuanced evaluation for the Application Question.
