A few notes on teaching this unit

Start with what students already know: ask them how they came to school today. Use this as a springboard to travel back in time. Use lots of pictures and stories to make the history come alive, focusing on key 'game-changer' inventions like the wheel and the engine. Encourage comparisons at every stage: 'How is a bullock cart different from a car?'

By the end of this journey, your students will be able to tell the story of transport, from walking on foot to flying in jets, and explain how simple inventions changed the world.


Watch Out for These Misconceptions

  • The wheel was first invented for carts and transport.

    Most historians believe the wheel was first invented around 3500 BC in Mesopotamia, but it was used as a potter's wheel for making pottery. Its use for transport came later, with the invention of the axle.

  • Steam engines are old and not used anymore.

    While steam locomotives are rare, the principle of the steam engine is still fundamental. Steam turbines, which work on a similar principle, are used in thermal power plants across India to generate the majority of our electricity.

  • People in the past did not travel much.

    While travel was slower and more difficult, people in ancient times travelled long distances for trade, pilgrimage, and exploration. They used caravans of animals, ships, and walked extensively.
