A few notes on teaching this unit

Begin with a class discussion about what students love to do after school. Use a mix of picture cards, videos, and real objects to introduce a variety of hobbies. Encourage peer learning by having students demonstrate or talk about their own unique hobbies, creating an inclusive and celebratory classroom atmosphere.

After exploring this topic, your students will be able to talk about different hobbies, understand why they are important, and feel encouraged to try new things.

Watch Out for These Misconceptions

  • Hobbies are just for play and have no real use.

Hobbies are fun, but they also help us learn new skills. For example, gardening teaches us about plants, and reading improves our language.

  • You have to spend a lot of money to have a good hobby.

Many wonderful hobbies are free or cost very little. Singing, storytelling, collecting interesting leaves, or reading books from a library do not require much money.

  • Only activities like drawing or singing are hobbies.

A hobby can be any activity you enjoy in your free time. This includes sports like cricket, collecting things like stamps, helping parents in the kitchen, or even bird watching.
