A few notes on teaching this unit

Begin with a picture talk, showing images of different weather conditions and asking where children would want to be. Use a think-pair-share to brainstorm ideas before introducing key vocabulary like 'shelter' and 'protection'. Ensure you show pictures of both kutcha and pucca houses to represent the diversity of homes in India.

By the end of this lesson, your students will be able to explain the main reasons we need a house and identify different things a house keeps us safe from.


Watch Out for These Misconceptions

  • All proper houses are made of brick and cement.

    Many strong houses are made from materials found nearby. For example, huts made of mud and straw ('kutcha' houses) are cool in the summer, and houses in hilly areas are made of wood and stone. Both are good homes for the people living there.

  • Only people need houses.

    All living beings need a home for safety. Birds build nests, rabbits dig burrows, and lions live in dens. These are their special houses that protect them and their babies.

  • A house is only for sleeping at night.

    A house is where we do many things. We eat, play, study, spend time with our family, and store our belongings safely. It is our safe space all day long.
