5th Year Science.
The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) Science course focuses on the practical application of science in everyday life, health, the environment, and technology. It encourages active, student-centred learning to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills relevant to the students' future lives and careers.

01Science and Health
This unit explores the human body, the importance of a balanced diet, and the impact of lifestyle choices on overall health and well-being.
Students investigate the components of a balanced diet and analyse their own nutritional intake. They explore the health consequences of poor dietary choices.
This topic examines the physiological effects of exercise on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Students measure and record their own fitness metrics.
Students learn about common pathogens, how diseases spread, and the importance of personal and community hygiene. The role of vaccinations and antibiotics is also discussed.

02Science and the Environment
This unit focuses on local and global environmental issues, ecological relationships, and sustainable practices to protect our natural world.
Students conduct a habitat study to identify local flora and fauna. They construct food chains and webs to understand ecological interdependence.
This topic investigates the sources and effects of air, water, and soil pollution. Students evaluate local waste management and recycling strategies.
Students explore the concept of sustainability and the importance of conserving natural resources. They debate the impact of human activity on climate change.

03Science and Technology
This unit introduces the practical applications of physics and chemistry in the home and workplace, emphasising safety and efficiency.
Students learn the basics of electrical circuits, wiring a plug, and calculating household energy consumption. Electrical safety is heavily emphasised.
This topic examines the properties and safe handling of common household chemicals, including cleaning agents and solvents. Students learn to interpret hazard symbols.
Students explore how modern communication technologies work, including mobile phones and the internet. They discuss the societal impacts of rapid technological advancement.

04Science and Agriculture
This unit explores the science behind food production, plant growth, and animal care, highlighting the importance of the agricultural sector in Ireland.
Students investigate the conditions necessary for seed germination and plant growth. They conduct experiments to analyse soil composition and pH.
This topic traces the journey of food from farm to fork, examining modern agricultural practices and food preservation techniques. Students explore the concept of food miles.
Students learn about the basic anatomy, nutritional needs, and welfare requirements of common farm or domestic animals. The ethical treatment of animals is discussed.
