Foundation The Arts
An integrated introduction to the five arts disciplines for early learners. Students develop foundational skills in expression, observation, and performance through play based exploration of color, sound, movement, and character.

01Making Marks and Telling Stories
Students explore the basics of visual arts by experimenting with line, shape, and color to express personal ideas.
Discovering how different types of lines can communicate energy, movement, and emotion in a drawing.
Exploring how mixing primary colors creates new possibilities and how colors influence our feelings.
Using clay and found objects to transform 2D ideas into 3D forms.
Investigating different textures through touch and sight, and replicating them in drawings and collages.
Understanding how repeating lines, shapes, and colors creates patterns in visual art.
Creating self-portraits using various materials to explore personal identity and representation.
Using a sequence of drawings to tell a simple narrative or convey an event.
Experimenting with cutting and pasting different materials to create new images and meanings.
Practicing drawing simple objects by observing their shapes, sizes, and positions.

02Rhythm and Soundscapes
Students investigate volume, pitch, and tempo through singing, percussion, and active listening.
Identifying and maintaining a steady beat using body percussion and instruments.
Exploring the concepts of pitch and dynamics to create musical contrast.
Creating soundscapes using everyday objects to represent environments and stories.
Identifying and describing different sound qualities (timbre) produced by various instruments and voices.
Learning and performing short, simple melodies, focusing on pitch accuracy and vocal expression.
Responding to different musical elements (tempo, dynamics, pitch) through spontaneous movement.
Using musical elements like tempo, dynamics, and timbre to tell a simple story without words.
Creating and performing simple rhythmic patterns using body percussion and classroom instruments.
Actively listening to and identifying characteristics of various music genres (e.g., lullabies, dance music).

03Body Language and Movement
Students use their bodies to explore space, weight, and time through creative dance.
Learning about levels and pathways by moving high, low, and in different directions.
Using facial expressions and body tension to communicate emotions without words.
Exploring the power of the frozen moment and the energy of sudden movement.
Experimenting with light, heavy, strong, and gentle movements to convey different qualities.
Developing coordination and communication skills through mirroring and leading simple partner movements.
Combining several movements into a short, repeatable dance phrase with a clear beginning and end.
Exploring simple movements and rhythms from different cultural dances.
Experimenting with fast, slow, and sudden changes in movement speed.
Working collaboratively to create simple group formations and transitions in dance.

04Characters and Imaginary Worlds
Students develop dramatic play skills by taking on roles and creating fictional situations.
Using costumes and voice changes to become someone or something else.
Using simple objects as symbols to build a dramatic narrative.
Working with others to create a short performance with a beginning, middle, and end.
Exploring how to tell a story or express an idea using only body language and facial expressions.
Using simple staging and imagination to create different environments for dramatic play.
Engaging in dramatic scenarios where characters face and solve simple problems.
Experimenting with different vocal qualities (pitch, volume, speed) to create distinct character voices.
Participating in short, unscripted dramatic scenes to develop quick thinking and collaboration.

05Digital Stories and Screen Magic
An introduction to media arts where students explore how images and sounds are used to tell stories on screens.
Using cameras or paper viewfinders to understand how changing a view changes a story.
Experimenting with light sources to create atmosphere and silhouettes.
Exploring how a series of pictures can show a passage of time.
Understanding how different sounds are used to enhance stories in films and animations.
Experimenting with flipbooks or simple stop-motion techniques to make objects appear to move.
Exploring how characters are presented in media, focusing on their appearance and actions.
Beginning to understand that media communicates messages and can influence feelings.
Arranging a series of photographs to tell a simple narrative or convey an event.
Exploring how background music in films and cartoons influences the audience's feelings.

06The World as an Art Gallery
Students look at art from different cultures and times to understand how people express their history and identity.
Exploring Indigenous Australian art styles and the use of natural symbols.
Learning how to talk about art politely and share personal opinions based on observation.
Identifying art in public spaces like parks, buildings, and streets.
Looking at simple artworks from the past and comparing them to modern art.
Exploring how art is used in celebrations, festivals, and special events around the world.
Exploring how Indigenous Australian art often reflects a deep connection to the land and its stories.
Discovering how art can be found in functional objects from different cultures, like pottery or textiles.

07Integrated Arts Project: Our Community Story
Students combine elements from visual arts, music, dance, and drama to create a collaborative performance or exhibition about their community.
Identifying key aspects, places, and people in their local community to inspire an integrated arts project.
Creating visual art pieces (drawings, collages, sculptures) that represent different aspects of the community.
Composing a soundscape using instruments and found sounds to represent the sounds of their community.
Developing simple dance movements and sequences inspired by community activities, people, or places.
Creating short dramatic scenes featuring characters and situations inspired by their community.
Using simple media tools (e.g., drawing, photos, sound recordings) to create a short 'film' or presentation about their community.
Presenting their integrated arts project to an audience, reflecting on their creative process and collaboration.
Working together to plan the sequence of events and artistic elements for their community story.
