Year 2 HASS
Year 2 HASS: investigating how the past is different from the present, how technology has changed daily life, and how people are connected to their communities and places.

The Past Is Different
Students explore how daily life, technology, and communication were different in the past, and why things change over time.
Comparing homes, clothes, and food from the past with today: what has changed and what has stayed the same.
From letters and telegrams to phones and the internet, how the way people talk to each other has changed dramatically.
Using photographs, objects, and oral histories to learn about the past. How do we find out what happened before we were born?
Investigating how classrooms, equipment, and lessons have changed since our grandparents went to school.

Technology Changes Our Lives
Students investigate how technology has changed the way we live, work, and play, from simple tools to digital devices.

The technology we use every day, including computers, tablets, and appliances, and how life would be different without them.
Big inventions that transformed the world, including the wheel, printing press, and electricity, and why they mattered.
Exploring how people moved from place to place, from horse-drawn carriages to electric cars and planes.
Examining the sophisticated tools and technologies used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for thousands of years.

Our Community Connections

Exploring the different cultures, languages, and traditions that make up our local community.

People and Places Around Us
Students investigate the features of local and distant places, and how people are connected to places through work and play.
Identifying the natural and human features of places, including hills, rivers, buildings, and roads, and how they shape what people do.
Comparing our local area with places far away. How are they similar and different? What can we learn from other places?
How people can take care of the places around them by reducing waste, saving water, and protecting nature.
Learning how to use and create simple maps with symbols and cardinal directions (North, South, East, West).
