Year 1 HASS
Year 1 HASS: exploring family histories, how daily life has changed over time, and the features of familiar places. Students develop curiosity about the past and present.

Family History and Traditions
Students explore their own family history, including where their family comes from, family traditions, and how families have changed over time.
Students create simple family trees and learn about the people in their family, including parents, grandparents, and extended family.
Exploring the special things families do together, including meals, celebrations, and customs passed down through generations.
Many Australian families have come from different parts of the world. Students explore their family's journey to Australia.
Learning about how families and communities remember important events through statues, holidays, and anniversaries.

The Way We Were
Students compare how things were in the past with how they are now, looking at toys, clothes, transport, and daily routines.
Comparing old toys with modern ones, and how play has changed and what has stayed the same.
Transport past and present, from horse and cart to cars, trains, and planes. How getting around has changed.
What a typical day looked like for children in the past compared to today, including school, chores, meals, and play.
Investigating household items from the past, such as washboards or rotary phones, to understand technological change.
Exploring what classrooms looked like long ago, including inkwells, slates, and different school rules.

Our Places and Spaces
Students explore the features of their local area, including the natural and built environment, and how people use and care for places.
Exploring what is in our local area, including homes, shops, parks, and natural features like rivers and trees.
How weather and seasons affect what we do and wear, and how First Nations peoples read the seasons of Country.
How we can look after the natural environment by reducing waste, planting trees, and being responsible.
Learning the basics of maps, including symbols, bird's-eye views, and simple directions.

Community and Connection
Students learn about what people need to live and how people work together in communities to help one another.
Exploring the difference between needs and wants, and the things all people must have to live safely and happily.
The people in our community who help us, including teachers, doctors, firefighters, and other community helpers.
How people cooperate and work together to get things done by sharing jobs, taking turns, and helping each other.
Understanding the roles and responsibilities within our own school and how we belong to this group.

Country and Place
Deepening understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives on land, language, and the local area.
Learning the traditional Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander name for the local area and its meaning.
Exploring how First Nations stories explain the creation of local landmarks and natural features.
Investigating how different First Nations groups observe changes in plants and animals to mark the seasons.
Comparing how First Nations people lived on this land in the past with how they connect to Country today.
