The Secondary 4 Literature in English syllabus aims to develop students' ability to critically analyze and appreciate literary texts. Students will engage deeply with prose, poetry, and drama, honing their skills in literary analysis, empathetic understanding, and constructing well-substantiated arguments in preparation for the O-Level examinations.

01Mastering the Set Text (Prose/Drama)
Students conduct an in-depth study of their prescribed O-Level set text, focusing on character development, thematic significance, and authorial craft.
Students analyze how characters are constructed and how their motivations drive the plot. They will evaluate the psychological depth of key figures in the set text.
Students trace major themes across the set text, examining how they intersect and reflect broader societal issues. They will synthesize evidence to support thematic arguments.
Students investigate the specific literary devices, structural choices, and stylistic techniques used by the author. They will evaluate how these choices impact the reader.
Students explore the historical, social, and cultural contexts of the set text. They will analyze how the setting influences the narrative and characters.

02Unseen Poetry Analysis
Students develop the skills to independently analyze and interpret unseen poems, focusing on form, imagery, and tone.
Students learn to identify and analyze various poetic forms, stanzas, and structural elements. They will explore how form dictates the rhythm and meaning of a poem.
Students dissect unseen poems to uncover the use of metaphors, similes, alliteration, and other devices. They will articulate how these elements evoke sensory responses.
Students analyze the speaker's attitude and the emotional atmosphere of unseen poems. They will practice identifying shifts in tone and their thematic implications.

03Unseen Prose Analysis
Students practice close reading of unseen prose extracts, evaluating narrative voice, pacing, and character dynamics under timed conditions.
Students examine how different narrative perspectives shape the reader's understanding of unseen prose extracts. They will evaluate the reliability and bias of the narrator.

04Synthesizing and Structuring Literary Responses

Students learn to break down O-Level Literature essay prompts to identify key terms and requirements. They will practice formulating focused and relevant responses.
Students develop strong, arguable thesis statements and clear topic sentences for their literary essays. They will ensure their arguments directly address the essay prompt.
Students practice seamlessly embedding quotes and textual references into their paragraphs. They will focus on providing deep analysis rather than mere summary.
Students refine their ability to offer sensitive, informed personal responses to literary texts. They will practice evaluating the overall impact of a text on the reader.
