5th Year Physics and Chemistry.
This curriculum explores the fundamental principles of Physics and Chemistry for 5th Class students, aligned with the Irish SESE Science framework. Students will investigate the properties of materials, energy forms, and the forces that shape our physical world.

01Properties of Materials
Students explore the characteristics of different materials, focusing on states of matter and how materials can be mixed or separated.
Students explore the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases. They investigate how particles behave differently in each state.
Learners examine how different materials can be mixed together and separated. They will explore dissolving and filtering processes.
Students investigate why specific materials are chosen for everyday objects based on their properties. They evaluate strength, flexibility, and transparency.

02Materials and Change
This unit focuses on how materials can be altered through heating, cooling, and chemical reactions.
Students discover how heating and cooling can change materials permanently or temporarily. They classify changes as reversible or irreversible.
Learners observe simple chemical reactions, such as mixing baking soda and vinegar. They identify signs that a new substance has been formed.
Students investigate the environmental factors that cause metals to rust. They explore ways to protect materials from decay.

03Light and Sound Energy
Students investigate the physical properties of light and sound, exploring how these forms of energy travel and interact with objects.
Students explore how light travels in straight lines and how shadows are formed. They investigate transparent, translucent, and opaque materials.
Learners examine how light bounces off surfaces and bends when passing through water. They use mirrors and prisms to manipulate light paths.
Students discover that sound is caused by vibrations traveling through different mediums. They explore how to change the pitch and volume of a sound.

04Electricity and Magnetism
This unit introduces the basics of electrical circuits and magnetic fields, allowing students to build and test their own systems.
Students construct simple electrical circuits using batteries, wires, and bulbs. They learn the importance of a complete path for electricity to flow.
Learners test various materials to see if they allow electricity to pass through. They classify materials as electrical conductors or insulators.
Students investigate magnetic attraction and repulsion. They map the invisible magnetic fields around different types of magnets.

05Forces and Motion
Students explore the invisible forces that affect how objects move, including friction, gravity, and mechanical advantage.
Students explore how friction slows down moving objects on different surfaces. They investigate ways to increase or decrease friction.
Learners examine the pull of gravity on objects and how it relates to weight. They use force meters to measure the gravitational pull on various items.
Students investigate how simple machines like levers and pulleys make work easier. They design and build their own simple lifting mechanisms.
