Leadership and Motivation

Leadership and Motivation explores how managers influence people to achieve organizational goals. Students compare different leadership styles: autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire: and evaluate their effectiveness in various Irish workplace scenarios. This topic is essential for understanding the 'Management Skills' section of the Leaving Certificate syllabus.

Role Play: The Leadership Spectrum

In groups of three, students are given a workplace crisis (e.g., a sudden deadline). One student acts as an autocratic leader, one as democratic, and one as laissez-faire. They role play the interaction, and the 'employees' then describe how each style made them feel.

A few notes on teaching this unit

Watch Out for These Misconceptions

  • Autocratic leadership is always 'bad'.

In emergency situations or with unskilled staff, autocratic leadership can be necessary and effective. Using a simulation of a high-pressure environment (like a busy kitchen) helps students see when this style is appropriate.

  • Money is the only thing that motivates employees.

While important, Maslow and Herzberg show that social needs and self-actualization are also vital. A collaborative investigation into 'Ireland's Best Workplaces' often reveals that culture and flexibility are higher priorities than salary alone.
