Grade 4 The Arts
This course introduces students to the diverse world of visual arts, music, dance, and drama. Students develop technical skills while learning to analyze cultural contexts and express complex emotions through various artistic mediums.

01Visual Storytelling and Composition
Students explore the elements of design and how artists use space, color, and line to tell stories.
Students experiment with different types of lines (curved, straight, thick, thin) to convey movement, emotion, and direction in their drawings.
Students identify and create visual textures using various drawing tools and explore tactile textures through observational drawing and rubbings.
Students learn and apply basic techniques like overlapping, size variation, and placement on the page to create the illusion of depth in their artwork.
Students identify and utilize foreground, middle ground, and background to organize visual information and enhance spatial depth in their compositions.
Students identify primary and secondary colors and experiment with mixing primary colors to create secondary colors.
Students explore the emotional associations of warm and cool colors and use them to evoke specific moods in their artwork.

02Rhythm, Melody, and Soundscapes
An exploration of musical notation, instrument families, and the creation of original sound compositions.
Students identify and perform steady beats and simple rhythmic patterns using body percussion and classroom instruments.
Students learn about basic time signatures (e.g., 4/4, 3/4) and how they organize beats into measures.
Students explore the concept of pitch, identifying high and low sounds and demonstrating them vocally and with instruments.
Students analyze simple melodies, identifying patterns of steps, skips, and repeated notes, and create their own short melodic phrases.
Students identify and categorize instruments into families (e.g., strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion) based on their sound production.
Students listen to and discuss music from various cultures, focusing on unique instruments and melodic scales.

03The Language of Movement
Students use their bodies to communicate ideas and emotions through structured and improvisational dance.
Students practice isolating and moving different body parts, developing control and awareness of their physical instrument.
Students explore how to use personal and general space, creating different pathways and moving at various levels (low, medium, high).
Students experiment with varying the speed (fast, slow) and duration (short, long) of their movements to create different qualities.
Students explore different qualities of movement energy, such as strong/light, sharp/smooth, and bound/free flow.
Students learn to combine individual movements into short, coherent dance phrases that express an idea or emotion.
Students learn and perform simple folk dances from different cultures, understanding their historical and social contexts.

04Characters and Conflict
Students build performance skills by exploring character development, voice, and dramatic tension.
Students experiment with varying pitch, volume, and tone of voice to create distinct character voices and convey emotions.
Students use gestures and posture to communicate character traits, emotions, and relationships on stage.
Students explore what characters want and why they want it, understanding how motivations drive actions in a scene.
Students participate in theater games and unscripted scenes to develop spontaneous reaction, listening skills, and collaborative storytelling.
Students explore how simple props and costume pieces can enhance character portrayal and storytelling in a scene.
Students learn basic stage directions and practice blocking simple scenes to create clear visual storytelling and actor relationships.

05Art in the World Around Us
Connecting artistic practice to history, community, and the global landscape.
Students investigate examples of public art in their community and discuss its purpose and impact.
Students explore how art can be used to express and celebrate the identity of different communities and cultures.
Students examine artworks from diverse global cultures, identifying common themes and unique artistic traditions.
Students explore how art has been used throughout history to tell stories, record events, and preserve cultural narratives.
Students discuss the various roles artists play in society, from documenting history to inspiring change and expressing beauty.
Students learn about the role of a curator and practice selecting and arranging artworks to tell a specific story or convey a theme.

06Creative Expression and Media
Students explore various art forms and media, developing skills in sculpture, printmaking, and digital art.
Students explore basic sculptural techniques using malleable materials like clay or playdough to create three-dimensional forms.
Students create relief sculptures by building up surfaces, exploring how light and shadow interact with raised forms.
Students learn basic printmaking techniques using simple materials (e.g., foam, vegetables) to create multiple impressions of an image.
Students create collages using various materials, exploring how combining different images and textures can create new meanings and narratives.
Students explore basic digital art tools and software to create simple drawings or manipulate images.
Students create simple flipbooks or stop-motion animations to understand the principles of movement and sequence in animation.

07Music Composition and Performance
Students apply their understanding of musical elements to compose and perform original pieces.
Students use rhythmic notation to compose and perform short, original rhythmic phrases using classroom percussion instruments.
Students learn about simple scales (e.g., C major pentatonic) and use them to compose short melodies on pitched instruments or vocally.
Students explore dynamics (loud/soft) in music, identifying and performing different dynamic levels to add expression to their compositions.
Students identify and perform different tempos (fast/slow) and understand how tempo affects the character and mood of a musical piece.
Students create soundscapes using found sounds, voices, and instruments to represent a specific environment or tell a story.
Students practice performing together as a group, focusing on listening, blending, and maintaining a steady beat and tempo.

08Dance Composition and Performance
Students apply their understanding of movement elements to choreograph and perform original dance sequences.
Students learn basic choreographic principles and create short dance sequences that incorporate different movement elements.
Students choreograph and perform short narrative dances that tell a simple story or depict a character's journey without words.
Students create abstract dance pieces that focus on expressing emotions or ideas through movement, rather than a literal story.
Students explore the relationship between dance and music, choreographing movements to complement or contrast musical pieces.
Students practice performing their choreographed pieces for an audience, focusing on stage presence, projection, and confidence.
Students learn to observe and articulate their responses to dance performances using appropriate vocabulary, focusing on elements of dance.
