Year 5 Mathematics
This course deepens student understanding of the decimal number system, geometric properties, and data interpretation. Students engage in rigorous problem solving to connect mathematical concepts to real world applications and logical reasoning.

The Power of Place: Large Numbers and Decimals
Students investigate the base ten system to understand how place value extends to millions and thousandths.
Exploring place value beyond hundreds of thousands and how the position of a digit changes its magnitude by powers of ten.
Connecting fractions to decimals and understanding the significance of the thousandths place.
An introduction to numbers below zero through context such as temperature and debt.

Operational Strategies and Algebraic Thinking
Focusing on efficient mental and written strategies for the four operations and identifying number patterns.
Developing fluency with multi digit multiplication and division with remainders.
Identifying prime, composite, square, and triangular numbers.
Describing and continuing patterns using additive and multiplicative rules.

Parts of the Whole: Fractions and Percentages
Deepening the understanding of equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and the concept of percentages.
Comparing and ordering fractions with different denominators using common multiples.
Converting between different representations of fractions greater than one.
Introducing percentages as operators and parts of one hundred.

Measuring the World: Shapes and Space
Calculating perimeter and area, and exploring the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects.
Using efficient strategies to calculate the boundary and surface of rectangles.
Measuring and constructing angles and identifying parallel and perpendicular lines.
Exploring reflections, translations, and rotations in the Cartesian plane.

Data Detectives: Statistics and Probability
Collecting, representing, and interpreting data while assessing the likelihood of events.
Designing surveys and using line graphs to show trends over time.
Finding the mode and median and discussing the variation in data.
Describing probabilities using fractions, decimals, and percentages.

The Value of Math: Money and Time
Applying mathematical concepts to financial literacy and complex time calculations.
Creating simple budgets and calculating GST and discounts.
Calculating durations of time and interpreting 24 hour clocks and transport schedules.
Exploring how different professions use the Year 5 math curriculum in daily tasks.
